A Fundamental Experience

Center of Excellence - Culinary Art Program

Culinary News

On October 15, 2012, OFHS took five teams of culinary students to Derby Lanes to compete in the local culinary competition sponspored by the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association. All the students that competed at Derby Lanes tried out for the team by preparing a dish within in an hour and then were judged by a panel of tasters. We are extremely proud of all our competitors. The gourmet meal teams were Mitchell Chase, Rachael Piscitello, Bryant Nyugen, Olivia Pedroff, Paulias Lukas, My’Kala Evans Ford, and Jha’Myhria Bank. The dessert teams were Kristan Manning, Haley Cox, Sumaiya Papa and Kiara Moos. The edible centerpiece teams were James and Richard Mickler. The team of Mitchell Chase, Rachael Piscitello, Bryant Nyugen, and Olivia Pedroff won the Silver medal for gourmet meal and Richard Mickler won honorable mention for his edible centerpiece design. Congratulations to our students. The culinary students sold over 80 apple crumb and pumpkin pies in November. Stay in tune for upcoming quiche sales and cupcake sales. Thank you in advance for supporting the OFHS Center of Culinary Excellence Program.

OFHS students visited the John and Mabel Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota.  They also toured the art conservation lab and the Ringlings’ art library.  Students from Mr. Stewart’s Literature the Arts and AP Art History classes had studied the art in the museum and were docents for the other students on the trip.  In the evening the students saw Clybourne Park, a play based on Lorraine Hansberry’s classic A Raisin in the Sun, which many of the students had read.
