Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Students:

We are pleased to welcome everyone to the 2012-2013 school year.  The purpose of this newsletter is to share important information that you will need as school opens.  Parents are encouraged to review the enclosed information with their student(s) and contact us should questions arise.

The challenge of improving our students’ performance to a higher level as measure by the FCAT and the Algebra I, Geometry and Biology End of Course Assessment continues.  I am very happy to inform you that Osceola Fundamental High School had the highest Algebra EOC Assessment Scale Score out of all of the high schools in Pinellas County for the second consecutive year.  We were also one of the top three high schools in both our Biology and Geometry EOC Scale Scores.

I am also very happy to report that out of all Pinellas County high schools, OFHS also has the highest total points scored on the available school grade criterion.  We are very proud of the achievements of our staff and students.   As soon as the College Readiness points are calculated, we should receive our school grade in December.

OFHS will continue to operate on a seven period schedule with a one hour early release on Wednesdays.  This year’s early release Wednesdays will be slightly different with the placement of two (2) lunches in the middle of the day (after 5th period) as in comparison to the past where lunch was held at the end of the day.  We will continue to operate two lunches on the other four days of the week as well.  In a effort to increase student choices, our school food service will provide vending machines with nutritional foods and beverages.

Hats off to Mark Sprecher, Head Plant Operator, and our wonderful plant operations staff, for doing another outstanding job in cleaning and beautifying our school grounds over the summer break.  The facility looks great and is ready for the upcoming school year.  I  would also like to announce the hiring of our new Assistant Principal, Mr. Mark Robertson, who will oversee Athletics/Activities.  Mrs. Ouellet will now oversee 9th Grade and all Fundamental Operations.

For your planning please note that the School Advisory Council (SAC), the Parent, Teacher, Student Association (PTSA) and Booster Associations will meet monthly.  Beginning on September 10, 2012, the SAC and Senior Parent meeting will occur and continue to meet on the 2nd Monday of each month (except December) at 7:00 p.m.  PTSA  and the 9th Grade Parent meeting will meet on the last school Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. (except December).  The first PTSA meeting is scheduled on August 30, 2012, with meetings from 6:00-7:00 p.m. or 7:30-8:30 p.m. (your choice).  The Booster Association will meet the first Tuesday of every month starting September 4, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. (except January).  Parents, we need your involvement in the school – tutoring, mentoring, or assisting with the various clubs and athletic programs that we offer.

On behalf of the Warrior Family, thank you for choosing OFHS for your child’s education.  I am very honored to be your principal and know my door is always open.  We look forward to working with you.

Your partner in education,

Michael C. Bohnet
Principal

OFHS STUDENTS ENJOY RINGLING MUSEUM AND ASOLO THEATRE

OFHS students visited the John and Mabel Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota.  They also toured the art conservation lab and the Ringlings’ art library.  Students from Mr. Stewart’s Literature the Arts and AP Art History classes had studied the art in the museum and were docents for the other students on the trip.  In the evening the students saw Clybourne Park, a play based on Lorraine Hansberry’s classic A Raisin in the Sun, which many of the students had read.
